March of 2020. A time we will never forget. A time that changed us all and life as we knew it. You know what I’m talking about. The Covid 19 pandemic lockdowns. Quarantine during the Covid pandemic was harsh and unnatural in many ways. Not being able to see loved ones or go anywhere was very detrimental emotionally to all of us.

Quarantine was unprecedented and terrifying. There were many people who became ill, and even today there are those still suffering.

While the Covid pandemic was and has been, extremely destructive, we must not let this get us down. We must find the good within the bad. A lot of families became closer and appreciative of what they had in each other. People became more self-reflective and more caring towards themselves. The Covid lockdowns also made the world slow down in a society that is constantly in motion.

We all felt the effects of this time in different ways, and this contest was an opportunity for poets to express and share their feelings and experiences during this time. There is solace found in relating to one another, even when things seem hopeless as they did during the height of the Covid pandemic. Even when we can’t physically be with people, we can still come together and find beauty in our words. There is always a silver lining. Always remember that even on our darkest days, there is always light to be found if you choose.

We were extremely pleased to receive such an overwhelming response from writers who participated in our Fruits of Our Quarantine Contest 2020.  Now, let’s see what poem inspired the judges the most.

The winner of the contest Fruits of Our Quarantine is… William Derge!
